- Toyota released the 40-Series Land Cruiser in 1960. Designed to replace the 20-Series model, the 40-Series played a significant role in establishing the Land Cruiser’s reputation as a tough, go-anywhere off-roader. It was available in numerous configurations, including short- and long-wheelbase models, and it sold spectacularly well: Toyota built the millionth Land Cruiser in 1980.
